Roncevalles to Zuribi

Today we started off 7:15ish, and after photos of the "Santiago 790 km" sign we were off.The map indicated that we would be walking a gradual decent fromm 800 m to 500m or so. It did show a couple of bumps along the way, but was not concerned.

Steep climbs and the long descent at the end of the day was definitely a record for me. I did not have enough water either or snacks.  Did not take one picture.Took me approx. 6 hours to cover 22km or so! Seem to be about the norm although at 7 pm at night folks are still arriving. No room at the refuge though and the talk is that the next few towns are full.

Sandra caught short her walking bit, due to feet problems. She made it approx 1/2 way today and then found a taxi. She fortunately made it to the alberque about 12:30 or so and booked us our beds thank goodness. First nite for me that I do not have to climb a ladder!

Once I arrived and found Sandra she opted to go for a nap, I showered, did laundry and then found a "pilgrims meal" at a bar. Shared the table with 4 young ladies and one fellow. They are in a choir in Barcelona, 3 studing medicine. They are on a tight budget so plan to sing in Pampolna to make some extra money. They were practicing along "The Way"! Had a great lunch 10 € for huge plate of salad, baguette, roast chicken and fries, custard with honey and wine! Seemed like a good deal at 1:30 when I was starving! Waddled back and after an hour nap we went to find provisions for tomorrow. Found a market, bought eggs, yogurt, fruut and a gaterade. That should do me for breaky and road food.

We went back to alberque and as we could not get the stove to work used my immersion heater to boil the eggs. I think it might be kaput now though. Anyway we met 2 young ladies who decided this past Monday to walk the Camino. They both were in Montreal  last month competing in the paraolympic world championships in swimming and came away with a bronze and silver. They are both from barcelona and were absolutrely inspirational! Funny enough when we got back to our dorms they are sleeping in the top bunks of both our beds.

We have spent the evening hanging out and meeting folks. Lots of chatter about tomorrows hike. Big climb and a crazy steep decent. I am worried about the descent bit!  We are discussing walking to the town before the ascent and catching a bus. Others are catching a bus from here straight to Pampalona. We have just decided to call it in the morning as it depends on Sandra's feet.

Am proud today of walking the  day's length and spent alot of time  by myself. Did find chatterers but preferred the alone time.

8:18 time for bed.
