Once we arrived in St. Jean we found the pilgrims office. Had our credentials stamped, got a number for a bed and maps for the walk. The rules of the game are that if you get to the albergue/refuge/hostel before it is open you are to leave your bag outside the door This hold your place in line.
Our albergue opened at 2pm. Big old building, just inside the gate of the fort walls. Built into the side of a hill, it is an old refuge originally providing services for the well todo. My room had beds for 12, was downstairs one level below street level and 2 showers. The room's window had a window sill which was probably 20 inches deep with huge wooden shutters. Loved the history!
We explored the old town, found food for the morning and the walk. Met some nice folks and then found my book and bed!
